Recipe for balancing your work and your life

Crabby Office Lady: (c) Microsoft

Crabby Office Lady

Life is a juggling act. Work, home, the family, the errands ... We all sometimes feel like hamsters on their wheels. And this year, lucky us, was a bissextile year; we got an extra day to run, run, run (and leap). This week I'm going to suggest a few ways to get some balance back into your lives.

The ingredients: Crabby's working person's balance recipe

2 level cups of organization
1/2 cup of time management,
1 tablespoon priority setting
1/3 cup of delegation
2 medium-sized cloves of talking to your boss
A dash of simplification
Optional: One to two shavings of considering a new job

Directions

When I am following a recipe, this is the point — putting it all together — where I stray. I mean, I've gathered the ingredients, they're sitting expectantly on the counter, and all my pots and pans are waiting in formation on the stovetop. But somehow, once I start using them, the execution of the literal directions tends to go awry. However (and this is a big however), I've learned that going exactly step by step isn't always all that important (unless it's a tricky souffle you're attempting). So, this week I have an additional quotation for you: "Cookery is not chemistry. It is an art. It requires instinct and taste rather than exact measurements." (Marcel Boulestin, chef and author of several cookbooks.) What I'm trying to say is that you need to pick and choose which cooking directions — and even ingredients — will suit your particular palate and needs for the banquet that is life.

  • Preheat oven to 98.6 degrees. Any hotter and this won't work. Flaring tempers just burn it.
  • Mix all the ingredients well and consider their particular qualities before adding them to the mix.
  • Change recipe at your discretion. People are like snowflakes: no one is exactly the same.
  • Bake until consistency feels right. Be sure to taste before serving.

I feel honor-bound to tell you, at the close of this column, that I am by no means an expert in the art of work-life balance. I've been trying to improve, and my situation as a full-time telecommuter has enabled me to get it better under control. As well, working for a company that prides itself on paying attention to its employees' needs has helped. But when you have a home office five steps from the living room, well, you see what I'm saying.

But honestly, even crabby ladies need to look themselves straight in the mirror and figure out what's working and what isn't. And so now that I've advised you to do it, I'll do the same.

"I was thirty-two when I started cooking; up until then, I just ate." — Julia Child

Optimize Windows Vista for better performance Part II

Limit how many programs load at startup

Many programs are designed to load automatically when Windows starts. Software manufacturers often set their programs to open in the background, where you can’t see them running, so they’ll open right away when you click their icons. That's helpful for programs you use a lot, but for programs you rarely or never use, this wastes precious memory and slows down the time it takes Windows to finish loading.

Decide for yourself if you want a program to load at startup.

But how can you tell what programs load automatically at startup? Sometimes this is obvious, because the program will add an icon to the notification area on the taskbar, where you can see it running. Look there and see if there are any programs running that you don’t want to load automatically. Position your mouse over each icon to see the program name. Be sure to click the Show hidden icons button so you don’t miss any icons.

Picture of the Show hidden icons button

The Show hidden icons button in the notification area

Even after you check the notification area, you might still have missed some programs that load automatically at startup. You can find and disable them using Windows Defender.

Picture of the Software Explorer screen in Windows Defender

The Software Explorer screen in Windows Defender shows which programs automatically start when you launch Windows

If you’re unsure about whether a program should open automatically at startup, you can try disabling it, restarting your computer, and then using the program. If that causes any problems with the program, you can go back and re-enable it to start automatically.

Optimize Windows Vista for better performance Part I

No matter how fast or shiny computers might be when they are new, they all seem to get slower over time. That state-of-the-art PC you bought last year might not feel like such a screamer after you install a dozen programs, load it with antispyware and antivirus tools, and download untold amounts of junk from the Internet. The slowdown might happen so gradually you hardly notice it, until one day you’re trying to open a program or file and wonder, "What happened to my poor PC?"

Whatever the cause, there are a lot of ways to help speed up Windows and make your PC work better—even without upgrading your hardware. Here are some tips to help you optimize Windows Vista for faster performance.

Delete programs you never use

Many PC manufacturers pack their new computers with programs you didn’t order and might not want. These often include trial editions and limited edition versions of programs that software companies hope you will try, find useful, and then pay to upgrade to full versions or newer versions. If you decide you don’t want them, keeping the software on your computer might slow it down by using precious memory, disk space, and processing power.

It’s a good idea to uninstall all the programs you don’t plan to use. This should include both manufacturer-installed software and software you installed yourself but don’t want anymore—especially utility programs designed to help manage and tune your computer’s hardware and software. Utility programs such as virus scanners, disk cleaners, and backup tools often run automatically at startup, quietly chugging along in the background where you can’t see them. Many people have no idea they are even running.

Even if your PC is older, it might contain manufacturer-installed programs that you never noticed or have since forgotten about. It’s never too late to remove these and get rid of the clutter and wasted system resources. Maybe you thought you might use the software someday, but never did. Uninstall it and see if your PC runs faster.

US intelligence unsure of Iran''s nuclear weapons intentions: chief

WASHINGTON: US intelligence does not know whether Iran intends to develop nuclear weapons, but at a minimum is keeping open the option of developing them, the new US intelligence director said Thursday. Retired admiral Dennis Blair said US intelligence assesses that Iran has not restarted nuclear weapons design and weaponization work that it halted in the fall of 2003. "Although we do not know whether Iran currently intends to develop nuclear weapons, we assess Tehran at a minimum is keeping open the option to develop them," he said in an annual report to Congress.

New York oil price plunges five-year lows

NEW YORK: New York crude oil prices fell below 34 dollars a barrel Thursday in a market plagued by weak energy demand reflected in new US data that showed surging crude stockpiles. New York'S main futures contract, light sweet crude for delivery in March, fell 1.96 dollar from Wednesday''s closing to 33.98 dollars per barrel. The contract is nearing five-year lows of 32.20 dollars hit on December 18. In London, Brent North Sea crude for March delivery rose 37 cents to 44.65 dollars per barrel. The price differential between New York crude and London Brent oil hit a record of nearly 11 dollars in a move attributed by analysts to speculative trading and high US inventory levels. "We continue to have very large inventories number in the United States, double of what was expected," said Bart Melek of BMO Capital Markets. "And we continue to see a decline on the demand side of the equation, and the prospects are that it''s not getting better any time soon. This has been the biggest recession for 60 years," Melek said. The US Department of Energy (DoE) said in its weekly report on Wednesday that American crude stockpiles soared by 4.7 million barrels in the week ending February 6. That beat market expectations of a 3.0-million-barrel gain. Elsewhere, the industrialized nations'' energy watchdog, the International Energy Agency (IEA), on Wednesday again cut its forecast for global oil demand this year.

Clean your computer

Preserve the condition of your system with regular maintenance

By Alyson Munroe

clean your computer

I have a dirty secret. I've never cleaned my computer. Sure, I've dusted my monitor, but I haven't taken off the cover or tried to reach the crumbs lurking inside my keyboard.

"Your computer could fry if you don't keep it clean," says Jonathon Millman, chief technology officer for Hooplah Interactive.

Dust clogs the vents behind your computer, which causes your CPU to heat up—and heat is the biggest cause of component failure in computers. Regular cleaning could save you costly maintenance fees down the road.

Keep your computer in tip-top shape by following Millman's guide to a spotless computer system.

Preparation

You'll need:

screwdriver

can of compressed air (available from computer dealers or office-supply stores)

cotton swabs (do not use a cotton ball)

rubbing petroleum

paper towels or anti-static cloths

water

Always turn your computer off before you begin and unplug all the cords.

Step 1: Inside the case

Using a screwdriver, remove the side of the case that's opposite your motherboard. Touch as little as possible inside the computer, keeping fingers away from cards and cords.

Blow air around all of the components and along the bottom of the case, keeping the nozzle four inches away from the machine. Blow air into the power supply box and into the fan (from the back of the case). Lastly, blow air into the floppy disk and CD drives. Wipe the inside of the cover with a lightly moistened cloth before replacing it.

Millman recommends doing this every three months if your case sits on the floor, if you have pets that shed, or if you smoke. Otherwise, every six to eight months is fine.

Step 2: Outside the case

Run a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol around all of the openings on the back of your case. Give them one swipe with the damp end of the swab and one swipe with the dry end. Do this as often as you clean the inside of your computer.

Step 3: Keyboard

Turn the keyboard upside down and gently shake it. Most of the crumbs and dust will fall out. Take a can of compressed air and blow into and around the keys. Next, take a cotton swab and dip it in rubbing alcohol. It should be damp, but not wet. Run the cotton swab around the outside of the keys. Rub the tops of the keys. If you have a laptop, follow the same procedure but take extra care with your machine. Do this monthly.

Spills — If you have kids, you're worried about spills. If it happens, disconnect the keyboard immediately and flip it over. Blot the top with a paper towel, blow compressed air between the keys and leave it to air dry overnight. For laptops, liquid can easily penetrate the hard drive so turn the computer over immediately and leave it in that position until it dries.

Step 4: Mouse

Rub the top and bottom of your mouse with a paper towel dipped in rubbing alcohol. Open the back and remove the ball. Wash the ball with water and let it air dry. To clean inside the mouse, dip a cotton swab in rubbing alcohol and rub all of the components. Scrape hard-to-remove grime with your fingernail. Finally, blow air into the opening. Replace the ball and the cover. Do this monthly.

Step 5: Monitor

Moisten a paper towel or a soft, lint-free cloth with water. (You can also buy monitor cleaning products at computer-supply stores.) Don't spray liquid directly onto the screen—spray the cloth instead. Wipe the screen gently to remove dust and fingerprints. Never touch the back of the monitor.

For laptop screens, Millman suggests buying a special cleaning solution available at computer stores. Do this weekly.

Finally, make sure that everything is dry before you plug your computer back in.

HP PAVILION DV8280US REVIEW

Given the availability of a multitude of products flooding the market it is extremely cumbersome for a buyer to decide upon the right notebook. In such a situation the HP Pavilion DV8280US comes as a godsend with its user friendly features and amazing performance. Fresh from the stable of computer giants HP, this notebook gives an excellent value for money. Cited as a flagship model by the firm, this notebook offers admirable performance at a good price.

The technical specifications are as follows:

  • Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP Media Center Edition
  • Intel(R) Core(TM) Duo processor T2300 (1.66 GHz)
  • 17.0" WSXGA+ Bright View Widescreen (1680x1050)
  • 256MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400
  • 2.0GB DDR2 SDRAM (2x1024MB) 667MHz
  • 80 GB Fujitsu 5400rpm SATA Hard Drive
  • LightScribe Double Layer 8x DVD+/-RW&CD-RW Combo
  • Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network with Bluetooth
  • HP Express Card Analog TV Tuner with remote control
  • 8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
  • Windows(R) XP Media Center Edition Backup CD
  • HP Mobile Remote Control
The HP Pavilion DV8280US runs on Microsoft Windows XP Media Centre Edition which spells great media experience for the user with unmatched quality for all your media related work including editing of audio and video files. The

processor is an efficient one which delivers swift computing and saves up on precious time. Furthermore, the exterior is also impressive with a well built body having firm hinges making it a durable product. It is easy on the eyes with its dual color scheme and well lit keyboard. A tiny innovation makes it a handy workstation; it is the addition of a calculator launch button which helps in saving a lot of time when one has to make calculations at regular intervals. The soft blue lights of the keyboard make the HP Pavilion DV8280US convenient to use in low light conditions which adds to its list of pros. Its two GB RAM and 17 inch screen give it an edge over similarly priced notebooks and it clearly scores over them in this. It has a dedicated video RAM making it a treat to work on when it comes to games and media applications. The fact that it is WiFi enabled can come in handy as there is no use of carrying cumbersome cords along with you at all places. Simply put, one can surf the net from any part of a WiFi enabled place with supreme mobility. Since The 17-inch WXGA+ high-definition BrightView widescreen (1440 x 900 resolution) gives a 45 percent larger picture for DVD movies than a 15-inch screen, it is a great buy for anyone with a taste for quality viewing. The video is powered by Nvidia GeForce Go 7400 graphics card and has a whopping 128 MB of dedicated video RAM. Nvidia's TurboCache feature increases the performance of this thin notebook PC without increasing its size or draining its battery. This longevity of the battery is a boon when longer hours of work are required with no charging options in sight. All in all, the HP Pavilion DV8280US offers a good value of money for its power packed features and performance.

Online Hard Drive Backup

Ensuring you have a second copy of all your important files, documents, videos, photos etc. is a must for any computer user. Backups shouldn’t just be thought of for businesses, they are just as important to personal computers at home especially if they hold precious family memories in the form of videos and photos that could never be created again if lost.

Step 1

You need to pick a backup service to use. The two popular ones that most people use are either Mozy home backup or Carbonite . Both have similar plans, We Have personally used both and like the software that Carbonite uses better the Mozy but it’s personal preference.
Visit one of their sites, sign up under their free trial and download the desktop software used to transfer the files from your PC hard drive to their online storage servers.

Step 2

Next you need to choose exactly what it is you’re going to backup. Most of us backup our entire My Documents folder, but you may have files stored on other areas of your home or office PC you want backed up as well.
After installing the software for the online backup service you’ve chosen their should be a video or some tutorial to walk you through how to add files and folders to your backup set.
With Carbonite it’s as easy as right clicking on a file or folder and selecting “back this up”. That file or folder will then be added to your backup set.
The great thing about this entire process is that as you add new files and folders to the directories you’re backing up those new items will be added to your backup set online.

Step 3

Time to start loading those files from your local hard drive onto the online backup server. Thankfully now the process is more or less automatic. You don’t need to move files one at a time up to the online backup server. The software you downloaded and used in step 2 does all that for you.
The first time you load everything up it might take sometime, but be patient. The big upload only has to happen that first time. Then from there on only files that are changed, or new documents and files are uploaded.

A Brief Introduction Into TCP/IP

Many people may not know what TCP/IP is nor what its effect is on the Internet. The fact is, without TCP/IP there would be no Internet. And it is because of the American military that the Internet exists.During the days of the cold war, the defense department was interested in developing a means of electronic communication which could survive an attack by being able to re-route itself around any failed section of the network. They began a research project designed to connect many different networks, and many different types of hardware from various vendors. Thus was the birth of the Internet (sorta). In reality, they were forced to connect different types of hardware from various vendors because the different branches of the military used different hardware. Some used IBM, while others used Unisys or DEC.
TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) and IP (Internet Protocol) were the protocols they developed. The first Internet was a success because it delivered a few basic services that everyone needed: file transfer, electronic mail, and remote login to name a few. A user could also use the “internet” across a very large number of client and server systems.
As with other communications protocols, TCP/IP is composed of layers. Each layer has it’s own responsibility:
IP is responsible for moving data from computer to computer. IP forwards each packet based on a four-byte destination address (the IP number). IP uses gateways to help move data from point “a” to point “b”. Early gateways were responsible for finding routes for IP to follow.
TCP is responsible for ensuring correct delivery of data from computer to computer. Because data can be lost in the network, TCP adds support to detect errors or lost data and to trigger retransmission until the data is correctly and completely received.
How TCP/IP works
Computers are first connected to their Local Area Network (LAN). TCP/IP shares the LAN with other systems such as file servers, web servers and so on. The hardware connects via a network connection that has it’s own hard coded unique address – called a MAC (Media Access Control) address. The client is either assigned an address, or requests one from a server. Once the client has an address they can communicate, via IP, to the other clients on the network. As mentioned above, IP is used to send the data, while TCP verifies that it is sent correctly.
When a client wishes to connect to another computer outside the LAN, they generally go through a computer called a Gateway (mentioned above). The gateway’s job is to find and store routes to destinations. It does this through a series of broadcast messages sent to other gateways and servers nearest to it. They in turn could broadcast for a route. This procedure continues until a computer somewhere says “Oh yeah, I know how to get there.” This information is then relayed to the first gateway that now has a route the client can use.
How does the system know the data is correct?
As mentioned above, IP is responsible for getting the data there. TCP then takes over to verify it.
Encoded in the data packets is other data that is used to verify the packet. This data (a checksum, or mathematical representation of the packet) is confirmed by TCP and a confirmation is sent back to the sender.
This process of sending, receiving and acknowledging happens for each individual packet sent over the Internet.
When the data is verified, it is reassembled on the receiving computer. If a package is not verified, the sending computer will re-send it and wait for confirmation. This way both computers – both sending and receiving – know which data is correct and which isn’t.
One nice thing about this protocol is that it doesn’t need to stick to just one route. Generally, when you are sending or receiving data it is taking multiple routes to get to its destination. This ensures data accuracy.
Just the facts:
TCP/IP addresses are based on 4 octets of 8 bits each. Each octet represents a number between 0 and 255. So an IP address looks like: 111.222.333.444.
There are 3 classes of IP addresses:
Ranges starting with “1” and ending with “126” (i.e.. 1.1.1.1 to 126.255.255.254) are Class A
Ranges starting with “128” and ending with 191 (i.e.. 128.1.1.1 to 191.255.255.254) are Class B
Ranges starting with 192 and ending with 254 (i.e.. 192.1.1.1 to 254.255.255.254) are Class C ( You will notice that there are no IP addresses starting with “127”. These are reserved addresses.)
Calculating an IP address
One of the things that always confused me was how to convert IP address to their Binary form. It is quite simple really. IP addresses use the Binary numbers (“1”s and “0”s) and are read from right to left.
Each position in the binary address corresponds to a number, from 1 to 128 and look like this:
128 64 32 16 8 4 2 1
To calculate an address, simply add the numbers where a “1” appears.
For example, the following:
00001010 works out to 10. Like this:
0 0 0 0 1 0 1 0
128 64 32 16 8 4 2 1
You can see that the “1”s line up with the 2 and 8 – when you add 2 plus 8 the answer is 10.
Since an IP address contains 4 of these octets, it can be displayed in binary like:
